This is the interior of what I believe is Italy's best pizzeria, Da Michele. It's in Naples, of course, where pizza was invented. My sister Debbie and I are just about to stuff our faces with those gorgeous pies. This is the famous place where Julia Roberts has "a relationship" with her pizza in the movie, "Eat Pray Love." It's also where Michael and Camille meet for the first time and get drunk on
This is Bernini's Fountain of Four Rivers (1651). It's the center fountain of the three that stand in Piazza Novana in Rome. The other two are Fountain of the Moor and Fountain of Neptune. This is where Camille tries to cheer up a disheartened Michael, and then Fabio shows up with a long-kept secret; he knows it's time to confess.
You can see the expanse of the Colosseum in Rome in this photo. Where my friend Sakura is standing is just about where Camille stands when she's looking across for Michael and Fabio who are on the other side. It was a much more crowded Colosseum on that day, and that's why at first they couldn't see each other.
Here I'm investigating a lemon farm in Sorrento. This is where I came up with the idea of Camille losing her high-heeled shoe to the branches of the lemon tree. Then Michael has to climb up the tree to retrieve it for her. They were both pretty drunk at the time, which made it hilarious and a lot of fun for them.
Here you can see a little of the interior of Antica Enoteca in Rome. It's a very quaint bar that serves unbelievably fresh pizza and pasta. (Where don't they serve fresh pizza and pasta in Italy? Come on, Joe.) Michael and Camille get hammered here while drying off after their search for her engagement ring in the Trevi Fountain. (They seem to get drunk a lot, don't they?)
Here I am with my friend Sakura again and we are tossing our coins into the famed Trevi Fountain, which assures our return to Rome. (It does work, by the way.) This is just about the spot where Camille stood and tossed her coin, along with her engagement ring, over her head and into the fountain. Oh no! Will she find it?
My buddies and I are standing in front of Gay-Odin, just about to enjoy our gelato. This is the tiny shop in Naples that sells scrumpdiddlyumptious chocolates and out-of-this-world gelato. It's one of the places Michael finds out about when he goes through his father's belongings at the very beginning of the book. In 1944, his father spent a care-free moment there with the mysterious Caterina, and
Isn't this a gorgeous old red Fiat? My sister Debbie and I are wishing we could take it for a joyride. Michael and Camille drove one just like it. Well, Michael drove, Camille panicked and screamed. You can't blame her, though. The hectic traffic and the crazy drivers in Rome would make any passenger go mad!
In this photo, you can see the interior of the ancient Pantheon in Rome. It's located in a tight area in the center of Rome, where it has been standing since A.D. 126. Originally a Roman temple, it was converted into a Catholic church in 609. This is where Camille decides to take off her high heels and pose in the rain. She hands her camera to Michael and he snaps away as the rain pours down on he
Here I am with my friend Sakura just outside Rome's oldest coffee roasting company, Sant' Eustachio Il Caffè. We're enjoying their deliciously refreshing espresso granita topped with whipped cream. This is the same place where Fabio took Michael and Camille for the same slushy iced treat!
Here we are at a cozy table outside Bar Tre Scalini, the iconic café in Piazza Navona that serves the most scrumpdiddlyumptious gelato, which as you can see from our empty dessert cups, we have already devoured. Tre Scalini is where Michael ordered two coffee gelatos that he and Camille ravished sitting on a stone bench outside the café in the blistering sun.
This photo shows the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the background. Neapolitans live in their lively city with the smouldering giant quietly sleeping so close by. I think it's one of the reasons why they live life with such gusto on the edge of their seats. This is where it all started for Michael and Camille.
